For many, many years I have held the belief that it is far more important and beneficial to treat the root cause of illness rather than to simply focus upon the symptoms. When one has a headache, for example, taking an aspirin may well ease the pain but the real cause of the headache could be due to eye strain. Taking pain killers will deal with the symptoms but prescription glasses might be what is needed to deal with the underlying cause and so eliminate the need for further aspirin.

The Stems and Branches system of acupuncture is several thousand years old and may well have provided the original foundation for all other systems of acupuncture. This fascinating system, as its name implies, allows the practitioner to deal with the underlying imbalances which cause the presenting symptoms in the patient's body. These symptoms may be physical, mental or emotional and by taking account of the patient's energetic strengths and weaknesses treatment can be tailored to go to the root of the problem.
Therefore fewer needles are used and it is usually the case that only three or four will be used over the body during any one treatment.

A careful pulse diagnosis will be made before acupuncture points can be selected. So it can be seen from this that the choice of points will vary from patient to patient even though they may be manifesting similar symptoms. We are all individual and I believe we should be treated as such.

This style of acupuncture can also be used as a preventive treatment. Patients will often return, after their initial course of treatment, for a top-up or M O T (as I call it), enabling them to more easily ward off ill-health in the future.
